Regiment z.b.v. 800 “Brandenburg” - Unternehmen Dora
The first use of Brandenburgers in North Africa was June 1941 when they where deployed for deep reconnaisance tasks. The ‘Tropen Kompanie’ was formed and used in late 1941 in sabotage missions behind enemy lines. It is known that German commando-type raids reached almost as far as Cairo, causing considerable damage and alarm to the British. In December 1942, a small glider-borne force destroyed the rail bridge at Sidu bou Baker in Tunisia and escaped unscatched. Another party was captured north of Kasserine.
The kompanie was under the command of Oberleutnant von Koenen, an experienced leader with great knowledge of Africa. He divided the Company into two half-Companies and sent the first in to Tripoli in October 1941. The second detachment sailed four months later to reinforce.
Most of the men in the ‘Tropen Kompanie’ not only spoke English more or less fluently, but also had command of Arabic and Swahili as main languages, backed up by several of the African dialects. It was intented that the Brandenburg detachments be used for covert reconnaissance operations; penetrating enemy lines with the use of 24 captured vehicles, aircraft, uniforms, and cooperation with local Bedouin tribes.
